There are even good boys in video games. Was your favorite included in the selection?
Dogs are loved equally in real life and in video games, rejoicing at their every appearance. They can become loyal companions, charismatic protagonists, or pleasant side characters that make the game a little more cute. No virtual world gets worse if you add friendly dogs to it.
And choosing the best four-legged friends in the history of video games is a rather difficult task, because such a list risks being endless, and therefore we limited ourselves to ten examples.
But first, let’s remember the best friends of a person who were not included in the selection – about the dogs from the Nintendogs. After all, it’s a beloved franchise that is a pleasure to return to, even after long breaks. It will not be possible to single out the best of the virtual dogs, because every gamer has his own favorites, but we can say for sure that Nintendogs is not able to charge positively all day long. Now is the time to move on to the main list.
Hunting Dog – Duck Hunt
The Grinning Dog first appeared on the NES in 1984 in the game Duck Hunt and became as symbolic of that gaming era as the console itself. You probably remember her annoying laugh that accompanied every mistake you made, and how you dreamed of shooting her.
For a long time it seemed that the hunting dog would remain the hero of one game, but that all changed with the release of the fighting game Super Smash Bros. on Nintendo 3DS and Wii U. Among the playable characters was the same dog who preferred to fight in the company of his partner duck in every battle. If you want to remember your childhood, then why not arrange a duel with an annoying dog in a virtual ring?
Chop – GTA 5
Rottweilers are mostly portrayed as very aggressive dogs, but how can you not love the cute face of Chop from GTA 5? Lamar Davis’s dog lives with Franklin for almost the entire game and helps him in various missions.
And in the in-game event, timed to coincide with Halloween, you can even turn into Chop and walk around the locations familiar from San Andreas.
Cerberus – Hades
Cerberus is a three-headed demonic dog that guards the entrance to the underworld of the dead. Who else can be entrusted with such a responsible task (not to let the souls of the dead into the world of the living), if not this handsome man?
The giant and terrifying Cerberus can be stroked from time to time to earn his trust. In the entire game, this can be done 20 times by choosing one of three heads, and hardly anyone would refuse the offer to stroke the guard of the hell gate.
Rush – Mega Man
Dr. Light unveils his newest invention, a loyal robotic dog named Rush. This companion first appeared in 1990 in Mega Man 3, where it helped us defeat Dr. Wiley and foil his evil plans.
Rush contains a useful set of gadgets and can transform into an electric coil, a hoverboard, and even a submarine. After this game, Rush regularly looked into the Mega Man series, remaining a devoted friend of the protagonist.
Lucario – Pokemon
The legendary fourth generation Pokemon Lucario is about to receive an updated version in the upcoming remake of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. He fell in love with fans of the series for his fighting style, passion for melee weapons, as well as his ability to influence the aura of opponents, sending them to knockouts.
Lucario also appeared in Super Smash Bros. He is certainly not recommended to be stroked, but he still remains one of the best dogs in video games.
Siba-inu – Silent Hill 2
Let’s simulate the situation. Imagine that you ran in horror for several hours in a row through the city, which was full of nightmares and fought with terrible creatures. But whose fault are you in this city? Who was behind these terrible events? The answer awaits you outside the door. You open it and see … shiba inu.
One of the endings of Silent Hill 2 is an unexpected and extremely funny plot twist, according to which the evil genius who was pulling the strings all this time turns out to be a cute doggie of the Shiba Inu breed. And thanks to the dissonance between the serious tone of the game and the caricatured final twist, this doggie will forever be remembered by gamers.
Isabelle – Animal Crossing
Mayor’s assistant. Responsible developer of residential areas. Karting fan. And finally, a fighter in Smash Bros. Apparently, nothing is impossible for a positive Isabelle, and the charming heroine is always ready to help the player.
First appearing in Animal Crossing New Leaf, it has captured the hearts of thousands of gamers around the world. And it’s very difficult to imagine a morning at Animal Crossing that would begin without her ringing gait and sweet chatter about the pressing little things.
Псина – Fallout 3
Surviving post-apocalyptic conditions and wandering alone through the wastelands is a rather bleak task. But you have a chance to meet Doggy, who will be happy to keep you company.
And the Dog will stay with you until the very end. She will protect you, attack enemies and just be the most devoted friend. But keep in mind that if Dog dies, that’s all. No respawns. Therefore, cherish and protect your four-legged pet as you would a real dog.
Ди-Дог – Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
Loyal friends can sometimes be found in the most unexpected places, and Dee-Dog is a vivid confirmation of this. After the protagonist takes the puppy off the battlefield, they quickly become best friends. And later, when Dee-Dog grows up, he becomes a full-fledged partner of the hero.
And this is a very useful partner in any mission, which is once again emphasized by the beautiful slow-mo scene in which D-Dog jumps into the helicopter before the mission. With its help, you can distract, stun or even get rid of opponents – what is not an ideal comrade?
Pa-Rappa – PaRappa the Rapper
Rapper dog Pa-Rappa and his powerful rhymes are the epitome of 90s nostalgia. His first appearance took place in 1996 in PaRappa the Rapper, released on the PlayStation, where the hero went through various tests that could not do without rap.
There were driving lessons and attempts to make a cake with which Pa-Rappa tried to impress his love interest – Sunny Fanny. And how can you not be impressed by the courage of a hero who is able to arrange a rap battle with teachers in front of the crowd. Recently, the game has gained a new wave of popularity (and its soundtrack is already playing in videos from TikTok), so we look forward to the return of the charismatic teenage dog.
