There are some very decent games in this genre. Even the shortest horror movies can scare you.
Recently, games have been trying to make them big. This also applies to horror movies. Gamers are attracted in different ways: huge maps, additional content, etc. Therefore, small titles fade into the background.
Among the best games, there are those that can be completed not in a month, but during a lunch break. This is especially true for horror movies, because short scenes are the most scary and memorable. We will take a look at the short-lived titles that are considered the best representatives of the genre.
From The Darkness
This game has incorporated the most creepy elements of Soviet life. Your task is simple: find a family scrapbook in your late grandfather’s apartment.
The most difficult thing is to leave the place. An evil spirit hiding in the dark begins to haunt you. Explore a small location and solve puzzles to stay alive and escape.
What could be worse than a dark corridor? What if you need to walk through it? This is the main idea behind SCP-087. You have to go down the seemingly endless staircase. Unexplained things are happening around you. Nobody knows what kind of creature has settled here. It is only known that no one returns from here alive.
PS1-style graphics go well with poor visibility and low light. Players are afraid to go downstairs, especially when they hear the screams of a baby coming from the basement.
PT (Silent Hills)
This game uses the effect of the “sinister valley”. The feeling “something is wrong here” does not leave you. The corridor featured in PT’s interactive teaser doesn’t seem to stand out at first glance. You pass through it several times, and each time the corridor becomes more creepy.
Now it is already endless, and unknown forces are chasing you. The only downside to this game is that it was canceled. Even on PS5 it is not available.
Sacrifices Must Be Made
Sometimes horror cannot be described in words. Sacrifices Must Be Made takes place in a dark room where you play cards with a mysterious personality. Unlike many horror games, there are no weapons or action.
Sacrifice weak creatures to gain access to stronger ones. But don’t get hung up on the card aspect of this game. As soon as you realize your position, your hair will stand on end. The full release will be available under the name Inscryption.
Water Womb World
A psychedelic mixture of Lovecraftian horror and religious fanaticism at the House Of Ashes level. Water Womb World tells the story of a scientist’s journey into the depths of the ocean in the hope of finding the Garden of Eden, and perhaps God himself.
Collect samples of marine life by sifting through silt and catching fish. The retro style 2D graphics are pretty realistic. However, some scenes defy explanation.
The style is reminiscent of classic PS1 games. Anatomy scares you not with violent scenes, but with a sense of danger. Explore an abandoned house, find cassettes and listen to them on an old player.
At first glance, the audio recordings represent a scientist’s philosophical reflections on the role of his home. But the situation soon becomes dreadful. Or maybe your house is also waiting for the right moment to swallow you?
Faith: Chapter 1
Be sure to play this streak. Each Faith chapter is completed in just an hour. As a priest, you will perform a second exorcism ritual to exorcise the ghosts once and for all.
Faith: Chapter 1 takes place in an 8-bit setting in the style of old rarity Atari games. Use all means to fight evil spirits. Some scenes use rotoscopy instead of normal animation. It looks scary.
The style of this game is inspired by 80s slasher movies. Murder House is reminiscent of PS1 horror movies like the original Resident Evil. The player controls a timid trainee in a TV studio. As part of a small group, you will travel to a house owned by the now deceased serial killer, who dressed as an Easter bunny.
Soon you will have to flee from a maniac while collecting Easter eggs along the way. The exciting atmosphere of this game keeps you on your toes at all times.
We Went Back
This sci-fi horror game takes place on an abandoned lunar base. Try to break out of the time loop and escape from the monster.
You have to explore the environment, look for clues and solve puzzles to find a way out. While there aren’t many horror elements here, be prepared for scary moments.
Japanese horror films are characterized by a special type of horror. The Caregiver makes an impression with its beautiful gaming world, which is overshadowed by an eerie VHS filter.
The protagonist is the guardian of a frail old man. You notice that an intruder is starting to pursue you. The game focuses on psychological horror, that is, nightmares are guaranteed to you.
