If you’ve already learned how to build any robots from scratch in MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries, it’s time to diversify the game with numerous mods.
Ever since the MechWarrior series (the BattleTech spin-off robot battle line) went into hibernation in 2002, fans have been eagerly awaiting its return. And now, with the release of MechWarrior 5 on the Xbox and Steam, fans of the franchise have a new field for experimentation and customization of robots that can destroy everything in their path.
But, as is often the case with modern games, the built-in customization tools will not satisfy everyone, and this is where mods come to the rescue. In the case of MechWarrior 5, modders managed not only to change the appearance of the robots, but to make significant adjustments to the gameplay. Combined with the tools from the base game, these mods create a unique gaming experience for every gamer.
Improved night vision
A moment of obvious facts: you can’t really see anything at night. And bad weather conditions can aggravate an already sad situation. This is a serious problem during battles, and standard night vision does not solve it in any way. Not only do enemies and important objects merge with the background, but also the whole picture turns into a blurry mess.
The new night vision improves the sharpness of the picture, thanks to which we have the opportunity to see more details in the frame – especially enemies and key objects on the map. The changes seem to be minor, but they make the gameplay much more enjoyable.
Shutting down friendly fire
While controlling giant robots, you can completely accidentally shoot one of your allies and not even notice it, so you need lightning-fast reflexes to survive. In the end, here you often have to shoot first, and only then sort out the situation, because while you are looking at the robot in the distance, trying to understand whether it is your own or someone else’s, you can catch an enemy projectile. And the AI in MechWarrior 5 sometimes leaves much to be desired.
Fortunately, this mod removes all the damage inflicted by allies’ robots – including those that appear on the battlefield in the middle of story missions. However, players can still accidentally destroy all other allies not sitting in robots, so attentiveness will come in handy even after installing the mod.
Change of contracts
Sometimes the task turns out to be much more difficult than expected. Only now, no one else will pay for it, because the contract was signed even before the mission began, and therefore the players have to overcome all difficulties, clenching their teeth, and be content with a modest reward. Witchers are familiar with this pain.
At least that was the way it was before this mod. Now you have the opportunity to open the contract and renegotiate its details – for example, request an increased fee if the mission turns out to be more difficult than it seemed. A great option for everyone who is used to fair wages.
Nobody likes it when weapons (or robots) overheat right in the middle of a fight. In MechWarrior 5, this mechanic seems to be tied to the environment. And the characters themselves note that depending on the biome, heat dissipates at different rates. For example, in the tundra, this should happen a little faster than in urban conditions. However, in practice, this effect is almost invisible and does not affect the gameplay in any way.
The environment must influence the battles, otherwise it will turn into a meaningless background. This mod corrects this misunderstanding and sets a different rate of heat dissipation for each biome. This not only makes the missions more interesting, but also adds variety to the robot battles. Who would have thought that MechWarrior 5 lacks a touch of authenticity?
Gamers are often drawn to something nostalgic. And if there is no such content in the main game, then there will definitely be a modder who will add it. At the moment, several mods with music and sound effects from the previous parts have already been released, but a mod with remasters of melodies from MechWarrior 2 and MechWarrior 4 deserves special attention.
Thanks for this to Timothy Seals, who records covers of old tunes and gave modders the go-ahead to use his work. Considering how long the MechWarrior franchise has come, it’s always a pleasure to listen to tunes from the early installments of the series.
The interface is one of the most important parts of MechWarrior 5. It is constantly in front of the eyes of the players while they control the robots, and they need to navigate by this data, planning their actions. However, some gamers believe that the disabled interface can increase the level of immersion in the game.
Therefore, since the release of MechWarrior 5, several mods have already been released that change the standard interface. Some add zoom effects, while others recreate the interfaces from the past. It will be difficult to advise any specific one, since everyone has their own concepts of convenience. Therefore, we recommend trying out each mod to find the one that suits you best.
Weather and environment
It would seem that battles in exotic environments involve special dangers. And in many other games it is. Unfortunately, the biomes of the standard version of MechWarrior 5 have very little effect on the course of the battle. And if you want to fix that, a dedicated mod is at your service.
First of all, it makes rain, snow and other weather effects much more intense. And if you add dark nights to that, then you definitely have a reason to use the aforementioned night vision. Moreover, each location is presented in several versions with different times of day. Thanks to these improvements, the environment becomes a full participant in the events, rather than a boring background.
Everything here speaks for itself. In this mod, the fuel supply in the jetpacks has been increased, so instead of the modest three seconds, the fuel is now enough for as much as ten. This means that robots are actually capable of flying across the battlefield.
Above ground battles are a necessary breath of fresh air in robots, making each match much more varied and allowing MechWarrior 5 to stand out more clearly from other first-person shooters. Moreover, the mod forces you to reconsider the traditional rules of battles: for example, a higher position no longer guarantees victory, because you have to keep in mind the fact that the enemy can always take off at the most unexpected moment. This means that the updated matches will not bore you for a long time.
New game +
This mode is always popular both in singleplayer projects and in multiplayer shooters with a story campaign. Many people want to go through their favorite game in the second round, without losing all the collected items and bonuses spent on pumping the character’s skills.
It is not surprising that a mod was found for MechWarrior 5 that allows you to start a replay. When installed, it simply erases all story progress in a specific save file, without touching equipment, robots and the resources you have acquired. Now you have the opportunity to fully appreciate the full power of your war machines, confronting them with weak opponents from the very first missions.
If you have already started installing mods from our selection, you may encounter some problems, including incompatibility of some mods. The fact is that some of the mods replace the base files of the game, making the installation of third-party updates extremely problematic.
This utility solves some of the problems by expanding the game asset registry. Moreover, many mods require the MW5 Mod Compatibility Pack to be installed. Therefore, this kit will become an indispensable tool for anyone who wants to slightly diversify the gameplay of MechWarrior 5. After all, what’s the point of installing kits with the best robots if they just break the game?
