10 classic RPGs without grinding | Easy Online Work

A lot of gamers hate RPG grinding, and the creators of the following classics knew it perfectly well.

RPG is not a genre for everyone. One of its main drawbacks is a tiresome grind built into the gameplay, without which the next boss or the next dungeon simply cannot be completed. And if Western RPGs at the very least avoided this problem, in many classic JRPGs it was almost the center of the gameplay.

Our selection today includes both western and eastern games, the authors of which decided to abandon the grind. Some of them managed to balance the gameplay in such a way as to make grinding optional, while others – to create a progression system that excludes the very concept of grinding. So if you’ve ignored the genre before for just that reason, it’s time to give it a second chance.

Elder Scrolls Series

Elder Scrolls is deservedly included in the list of cult western RPGs. Each of the games in the series is capable of giving gamers hundreds of unforgettable hours. Since the level of difficulty and the strength of the enemies are directly tied to the level of the protagonist, there was no place for the grind in the games. And if you want to test yourself for strength, you can always increase the difficulty in the menu, which will speed up the pumping of your hero. Each gamer has his own favorite part of the Elder Scrolls, but Skyrim remains the most popular and accessible for beginners.

Final Fantasy 10

Final Fantasy 10 deviated slightly from the classic franchise formula. For example, the traditional linear character leveling has been replaced by the Sphere Grid. Players could still run across locations and get involved in all sorts of battles, but getting to the end of the story was real even without this routine.

If you understand all the game mechanics, then the passage of Final Fantasy 10 does not require a minute of grinding. But the side quests will have to spend a lot of time, but, fortunately, they are all optional.

Legendary cosmooper of epic proportions, BioWare has drawn the studio’s attention to a mainstream audience. And the combat system of Mass Effect looks exciting and interesting, without even delving into specific RPG mechanics.

The game can be safely passed without any grind, because you can emerge victorious from any battle, relying solely on your skills. This is the secret of Mass Effect’s success: the emphasis is not on monotonous grinding, but on story, characters and a world rich in details.

This turn-based tactical RPG is known for its complexity. She is also known for the fact that the wrong decisions in the early stages of the passage can lead to the failure of the entire storyline campaign. There is simply no time left for grinding in the game: while the story is developing rapidly, you need to pump your base and army as efficiently as possible. The emphasis here is on the allocation of resources, rather than on filling the experience bar.

Almost all Kingdom Hearts games can be completed without hitting the exhausting grind. For example, the first part, which is considered rather short by RPG standards. In it, experienced players can easily reach the finals, even on high difficulty.

Of course, pumping will make boss battles much easier, but in most cases it is enough to choose the right strategy for each battle. And while the franchise is famous for its convoluted plots, the gameplay in the main parts of the series is almost flawless.

This cult project is remembered for its setting and unique gameplay. Valkyria Chronicles mixes RTS mechanics artfully with elements from tactical RPGs like Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together.

Each battle moves the plot forward, and short and varied side-quests help pump your soldiers without slipping into a dull grind. Even with this linear approach, the content in Valkyria Chronicles lasts a good 30 hours.

The unusual pumping system in Chrono Cross, as, by the way, in Chrono Trigger, will definitely delight all grind haters. Interestingly, Chrono Cross has consistently made it onto all sorts of lists of the best RPGs for the PS1, while its predecessor, Chrono Trigger, has become a cult classic of the SNES era.

The game also impresses with the number of playable characters (over 40) that you can recruit to your squad. At first it may seem like it has nothing to do with Chrono Trigger, but as the story progresses, the connection between the games becomes apparent.

When the Fallout series fell into the hands of Bethesda, the developers decided to turn it into a first-person RPG in the style of the Elder Scrolls franchise.

And although the strength of opponents was not tied to the level of the hero, the gameplay of the series was reworked in such a way that equipment and weapons were now decisive in battle, and not the number of experience points. You can reach the maximum level of the hero in Fallout 3 even while completing the main tasks, so in the game you will have to rely heavily on your resources.

Monolith Software’s Xenosaga was one of the building blocks of a franchise called Xenoblade Chronicles. However, this PS2 RPG does not boast the same large-scale open world that its sequels sported. But this is also a plus: a game without a huge open world simply does not need a grind.

In addition, the emphasis in the trilogy is on the narrative, and therefore there are many long cutscenes in it. All this is typical for the previous game from Tetsuya Takahashi – Xenogears, released on PS1.

The Witcher 3

This is the newest of the games in our collection, but, nevertheless, it has already become a classic. And in The Witcher 3, almost everything is great: from a thoughtful story with a non-linear plot, depending on the player’s decisions, to a deep combat system and polished gameplay.

You will not be able to grind in the game, even if you wanted to, because for repeated side quests you will no longer be given experience. By this, the developers emphasize that even in side missions, the plot is much more important than experience points.
