Even so many years after the end of the franchise, fans are missing out on something in the endings of Mass Effect 3.
Bioware’s infamous Mass Effect trilogy finale is hated by many fans of the series and the company itself. Active discussions around him continued even when the game ceased to be relevant, smoothly flowing into criticism of crunch in the gaming industry, and the people involved in the development of the game repeatedly talked about what they would like to change in the resulting endings.
While fans of the series are eagerly awaiting more information on the next installment, the current trailer has sprung up a lot of theories about how the Mass Effect 3 ending will affect the storyline. Here are a few details you might not have noticed in Mass Effect 3’s stunning traffic lights.
Refusal of choice
It is often said that Mass Effect 3 has three endings with varying degrees of success depending on the player’s actions during the game. However, this is not entirely true: those who were not afraid to answer the Catalyst with a refusal or shoot at him, took a completely different path.
In both cases, the child’s voice distorts and announces that the cycle will continue. In the future, it will turn out that one of Liara’s time capsules survived on another planet. Not the most pleasant ending, but what it is.
Landing on Earth
Noticing the famous Big Ben in the background, the players quickly realized that missions on Earth were taking place in London. However, fans hardly knew that at the beginning of the mission, you can determine your exact location.
Priority Land begins on the left bank of the Thames, in the area of present-day Hungerford Bridge. This is indicated by the location of Big Ben, as well as other recognizable landmarks that can be seen in between battles.
Each ending is told by a different character
Players who didn’t replay the ending may never have learned that each of the three main endings is told by different characters. Admiral Hackett will talk about the consequences of the “Annihilation” ending, as Shepard is presumed dead.
In the “Control” ending, Shepard is the narrator, who has become an AI and has moved to a new level of existence. Finally, the “Synthesis” ending is revealed by EDI, the AI on Shepard’s team, whose romantic relationship with the Joker has grown even stronger since the DNA of organics and synthetics has merged.
Admiral Hackett’s Predictions
Despite the fact that Hacket voices only one of three possible endings, in fact, there are two versions of his speech. In one of the versions, he grieves over the sacrifices made for the sake of defeating the Reapers, but at the same time hopes for a bright future, in which the survivors will be able to restore everything destroyed.
However, if by the beginning of the last mission the player did not manage to achieve high combat readiness of the troops, then Hacket’s story will be much darker. All things considered, his outlook on the future will not be the most optimistic.
Krogan restore Tuchanka
Krogan in the Mass Effect universe try to survive despite the action of a special biological weapon, a genophage, which limits their ability to reproduce.
That is why it is so nice to see in the finale how they are actively restoring their home planet, which had previously been turned into a radioactive desert. When choosing the “Synthesis” ending, you will also see the new Tuchanka skyscrapers.
New Horizons for Quarians in Annihilation and Control
Quarians in Mass Effect are a race of humanoids forced to leave their home planet due to the war with the Geth and roam the galaxy as part of the Migrant Fleet. They rarely leave their ships to interact with other species.
However, during the endings “Control” and “Annihilation”, you can see how several quarians freely communicate on the surface of a certain planet (the picture quickly changes, so it is difficult to see the details indicating this), which is usually alien to them. Hopefully, after the events of Mass Effect 3, the quarians are finally lucky.
Geth Returning Quarians to Their Homeworld in Synthesis
If you choose the “Synthesis” ending, you will see how the Geth and Quarians form a new joint society on Rannoch. And while in theory it could be any planet, it should be noted that the quarian does not wear a mask.
This detail suggests that the quarians have returned to their homeland, where it is easier for them to survive without protective suits. Over time, their immune systems should be restored, and then they will be able to freely visit other planets.
The Hero and the Renegade in the Control Ending
If Shepard chooses the “Control” route in the Mass Effect 3 finale, there are two possible futures. However, unlike Hacket’s ending, Shepard’s narrative does not depend on the level of combat readiness of the troops.
The decisive factor will be the protagonist’s bias towards the reputation of a Hero or Renegade. Of course, the heroic Shepard has very different plans for his new abilities than his harsh counterpart.
Survival of Shepard in the “Annihilation” ending
Choosing the “Annihilation” ending, the player expects Shepard to die, as the Catalyst warned. And this is true, but only if you have a low level of combat readiness. In this case, the romantic interest of the protagonist will place a plaque with Shepard’s name on the memorial, after which he will receive consolation from the other surviving members of the team.
If Shepard enters the final battle with a high level of combat readiness of the troops, the romantic interest will not hang a plaque on the memorial, but will continue to hold it and smile. At the very last moment, so easy to miss, we see Shepard’s chestpiece among the rubble on Earth, shuddering with a brief sigh.
Buzz Aldrin as Stargazer
Stargazer appears in the post-credits scene where an adult tells a child about Shepard’s exploits, how he helped win the war and save the galaxy. If the player chooses the “Denied” ending and allows the cycle to continue, a woman will be next to the child.
In all other cases, the Looker is a man. Perhaps you have already heard his voice somewhere, but did not recognize it. This is because this character is voiced by the famous American astronaut Buzz Aldrin – one of the first people to visit the lunar surface!
