The expectations of fans of the genre are growing and growing, especially when games are supplied with at least 50 fighters even before the DLC is released.

One of the biggest annoyances of any new fighting game is the limited selection of playable characters. Even if you only plan on playing as one hero, the lack of variety in your opponents can make things very boring very quickly. The release of Street Fighter 5, with just 16 characters, hit the game’s ratings so badly that it hasn’t bounced back to this day. The King Of Fighters 15 will be released with 39 characters and by all accounts this is still not enough.

SFV’s roster has tripled since release, a testament to the extra content’s ability to extend the life of fighting games, but it’s worth remembering a few classic fighting games from the early 2000s that set potentially inflated standards for playable characters within reasonable expectations. Arena fighting games don’t count, unless you want to go through a roster completely dominated by Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi and Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm.

Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millenium 2001 (48)

CvS2 was the culmination of a multi-year collaboration between the two fighting titans that has stood the test of time. All these characters seem to be of the same tailoring, and when you saw them all together, in one game, there was a feeling that they had known each other for many years.

With all the new characters both companies have created since 2001, it’s a shame that Capcom and SNK haven’t worked together for two decades. However, in an age of DLC and long-term in-game support, don’t expect them to release a game with such a high density of available fighters on release someday.

More than four years after its release, Tekken 7 is a candidate for the title with the longest studio support, starting with 37 characters in 2017 and adding 14 more. Technically, support lasted more than six years since the arcade version. appeared back in 2015.

12 characters were new, original fighters from the Tekken series, and four more were guests from other series. Additional levels, modes and functions have not been forgotten either. However, believe it or not, 51 characters are still not the limit for this franchise.

Oops, is your fighting game a crossover between just two universes? How cute. BBTAG came out as a crossover between four episodes at once: BlazBlue, Persona, Under Night In-Birth and RWBY. Towards the end of its life cycle, the game also featured characters from Arcana Heart, Senran Kagura, and Akatsuki Blitzkampf.

Following the success of Guilty Gear: Strive and Dragon Ball FighterZ, Arc System Works may never return to 2D sprite-based characters, making BBTAG the last farewell monument marking an era for kings of anime fighting game development.

Almost all were assembled – but only almost. Sakurai and company also still have not assigned Lucina and Dark Peeta under the category of “echo fighters”, so the total number of completely unique characters should be 53.

It’s worth noting that for their first foray into the post-release add-on era, Nintendo made a big splash with guest characters like Clyde and Bayonetta. An impressive line-up – however, no fan of the series was prepared for the wealth of variety that the next Nintendo console was preparing to deliver.

Street Fighter X Tekken (55)

SFXT will go down in game history as one of the biggest missed opportunities (its negative reception by the public ended the development cycle of Bandai-Namco’s Tekken X Street Fighter), but the game must be given credit: the final set of characters is huge and is a coherent story of two legendary series.

The total number of fighters reaches 50 on all non-PlayStation platforms, but with the exception of Pac-Man, those PS-exclusive characters (Toro, Kuro, Cole from Infamous and Megamen) are unlikely to be missed.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes (56)

All the Capcom sprites from Street Fighter Alpha, Darkstalkers, and X-Men: Children of the Atom come together with the superheroes of Marvel in a beautiful jumble of MvC2. Capcom even had to cut a few frames from the animation of the original sprites to fit all the data onto one disk.

History has shown that the decision was right: MvC2 is now one of the most highly regarded fighting games of all time, spoiling us with a huge number of initially available characters long before the concept of DLC even began to exist.

The King of Fighters XIV (58)

The game’s release with 50 playable characters may fall short of MvC2 standards, but in the modern era of DLC support, it’s still a respectable, consumer-centric super strategy game. Even excluding 8 DLC characters, KOF14 is by far the most content-rich SNK game.

The project is often criticized for not very impressive graphics, especially in comparison with the beautiful 2D sprites from The King of Fighters 13, but still no one can say that the players who purchased KOF14 wereted their money.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 (59)

TTT2 featured an expansive roster that included every playable character in Tekken history. Only one fighter (Gon from Tekken 3) didn’t bother to get into the game, but only because he came from a licensed manga to which Bandai-Namco was not able to get the rights again.

The game itself, however, was one of the most egregious examples of an overabundance of “clone characters” to complete the roster. Characters such as Marshall Law and Forest Law occupied different slots on the selection screen, but at the same time they were completely the same in the gameplay, and therefore the number of unique fighters in the game actually goes closer to 50.

Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (64)

Who needs DLC anyway? This game was released on PlayStation 2 in 2006, and none of NetherRealm Studios’ other projects, be it the Mortal Kombat franchise or Injustice, came close to the number of playable characters in Armageddon. It doesn’t matter how weird or unpopular the fighter was, every playable character in the series’ history has been in the game, no exceptions.

But this was, unfortunately, the only advantage of the game. Armageddon is a cautionary tale about how quantity should not prevail over quality even in fighting games.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (81)

You can calm down now, Mr. Sakurai. That’s enough already. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate not only surpasses the playable roster of any other fighting game by at least ten characters – it does so without even taking into account echo fighters like Daisy and Dark Samus.

And no matter what side obstacles prevented Solid Snake from reaching Smash on Wii U, this time they could not stop Sakurai and Nintendo. “Everyone is here!” – not just a slogan; this is a promise.
