These titles are usually overlooked, but each one offers incredible and often unique gameplay.
There are many famous games out there that have been acclaimed by critics and gamers for their brilliance. In the past few years, titles like Red Dead Redemption 2, Breath of the Wild, and God of War have been praised throughout the industry. However, great games are often overlooked; most do not recognize them as good, which ultimately leads to them being forgotten.
All of the games on this list are excellent, from platformers to first-person shooters. All of them will leave a good impression on you, and in addition, these titles have fans who continue to praise them despite the lack of general recognition. Here are some of the most underrated games released in the 21st century.
Date Released: 01/12/2009
Mirror’s Edge is a parkour game like no other and arguably the best in this relatively unexplored genre. The whole idea revolves around you playing as a character named Faith, on the run after her sister is falsely accused of a crime she did not commit. All this takes place in a beautiful utopian city that, despite the fact that the game is more than ten years old, still looks amazing.
The title is quite short, but every minute of playing time is intense and challenging. You are trying to make your way through the cityscape, be pursued by the omnipresent force, determined to destroy you. For some reason, Mirror’s Edge was grossly underestimated at the time of release. No other game has yet come close to replicating the uniqueness of the title.
Date Released: Dec 29, 2011
VVVVVV is a great platformer, albeit wildly challenging in places. The title is inspired by old 8-bit platformers, but it has a unique flip mechanic that allows you to control gravity and change the direction of movement of the main character, Captain Viridian. After completing the main game, you can play another set of levels created by third parties, which will add a few extra hours to your playthrough. VVVVVV is arguably Terry Kavanagh’s best work and well worth the time.
Date Released: Feb 09, 2010
Bioshock is considered one of the best shooters of the 2000s, but its sequel is heavily underrated despite being just as good, if not better than the original in some ways. You play as one of the Big Daddies, and you are tasked with solving the mystery of the disappearance of little girls on the Atlantic coast, and all the answers are hidden in Rapture.
The title’s gameplay is incomparably ahead of the original, and the return to Rapture is as enjoyable as you’d expect. Bioshock 2’s version of the city is the best setting in the series, and aside from a few weird opening hours of gameplay, the game is great.
Release date: 28.10.2016
Titanfall 2 is one of the best first-person shooters you’ve probably never played, as it came out between the releases of Call of Duty and Battlefield. The campaign is one of the best in the history of the genre, but the real cherry on the cake is the multiplayer, which is incredible, especially with the added titans bringing a lot more variety to the fights.
Moreover, all DLCs, except for the cosmetic ones, are completely free. Most of the other developers have followed suit lately. The title is now overshadowed by Apex Legends, but Titanfall 2 deserves more attention.
Release date: 28.10.2014
One of the most underrated games of the previous generation is a rare step away from the PlayStation platform for Insomniac Games. Set in a city infested with mutants, it’s a near-future open-world game where you must rid yourself of the threat using bizarre weapons and abilities.
You can run up the walls and ziplines for parkour around Sunset City, with the title encouraging you to stick to a fast playstyle and rewards for quickly killing enemies. Besides, it’s not that hard. Sometimes the game can just make you feel cool and strong without reminding you that you suck.
Date Released: Apr 19, 2005
Psychonauts is a rather strange game. The main character, named Raz, sets out on an adventure after he learns that a mysterious figure is stealing psychic children to use their brains for their nefarious purposes. This adventure takes you into the minds of many different characters, each with their own nightmares and inner demons to fight against.
This is an incredibly creative title that brings ideas to the fore that other games would be afraid to even mention. Now is the time to play Psychonauts as a sequel is on its way.
Risk Of Rain 2
Release date: 11.08.
Risk of Rain 2 is a rogue-lite third-person title with a minimalist style, although the gameplay is full of dramatic scenes and synergies at all stages of the passage. The title may be a little overwhelming at first, but it will eventually make sense, and by then you’ll have an addiction.
The game even has a cooperative mode, you and three other friends (or enemies) can play together. The gameplay is extremely enjoyable and the level of detectable and unlockable content is unprecedented even for a rogue-lite game.
Release date: 30.08.2019
Astral Chain is an action-adventure game created by the great minds of Platinum Games, which takes place in the near future in a city on the verge of an invasion of strange creatures. Your character joins a police squad called Neuron, where each is assigned a “Legion” who is a partner in both the detective and combat parts of the game.
It’s a very ambitious game that looks and works amazingly well on the Nintendo Switch. Especially worth noting is how frantic battles can unfold towards the end of the game. The title also strikes a great balance between funny moments and a serious, well-adjusted plot.
Star Wars Battlefront II
Release date: 14.11.2017
Star Wars Battlefront II has gone through one of the greatest rebirths in gaming history, initially causing huge scandals with both a lack of content and a deeply embedded microtransaction system. After years of updates and content releases (all for free), the current game is a modern love letter to the Star Wars franchise and is a great shooter for both movie fans and shooter fans alike.
This is a high-end shooter. Most maps and many game modes are fun to play, although some modes can take too long. Of course, having a Star Wars license gives Battlefront II an additional edge in some areas. Nothing beats the feeling of being immersed in battle with Luke Skywalker’s famous green lightsaber in hand or using the seismic charge of Slave I.
Date Released: Sep 19, 2006
Okami has definitely been hit hard by the same release date as Twilight Princess. The similarities with the Zelda series also didn’t help. Okami combines fantasy and action-adventure to create a stunning watercolor adventure set in feudal Japan.
Your main weapon is a magic brush that allows Amaterasu, the wolf goddess you play as, to interact with the world around you, solve puzzles and destroy enemies. If anyone ever doubts that games are art, just show them Okami.
