Dead Space games are famous for their scary atmosphere and eerie locations, and now we will tell you about the brightest of them.
Want to embark on a terrifying, claustrophobic space voyage? Then you will not find a better option than the Dead Space series. No other franchise can capture the helplessness of being constantly pursued by creepy beasts that seem to have stepped off the cover of heavy metal albums, all in a crushing confined space. What most players don’t realize, however, is that the bulk of the fear comes from the masterful level design from the Visceral Games team.
Many locations in the Dead Space series would be great for filming quality horror films. From abandoned shuttles to school offices, the fight against necromorphs will take you to the darkest corners of the universe, both literally and figuratively. Almost every level of the franchise fits this definition, but some bring completely unique emotions. Darkness, horror, despair – you will find all this in the following locations.
Dead Space – Mooring Deck
Our list opens with a location that most fans do not even think about, but they will definitely never forget. This is a kind of acquaintance with Ishimura in the first part of Dead Space. Of course, there is not such a powerful sense of fear here as in some of the subsequent levels, but this grim introduction eloquently demonstrates how a situation can get worse overnight. Now you calmly wander around the normally lit hall, and the next minute you observe how your colleagues are smeared on the floor.
From now on, the mooring deck turns into a real nightmare for beginners: here you will find numerous ambushes, an intense soundtrack, and merciless pursuits in tight corridors. All this did not stand next to the subsequent tests, but the first location definitely deserves a place on our list (albeit the lowest) for a more than decent representation of Dead Space: this game can scare in a matter of moments.
Dead Space – Вейлор
The warship USM Veylor carried many experienced soldiers on board, but was eventually captured by the Necromorphs and only added to Isaac’s problems. In the chapter “Dead Space”, the crashed destroyer is not very atmospheric at first, but the situation changes dramatically soon after.
Examining abandoned spaceships is a common thing in Dead Space, but Veylor clearly stands out from the crowd with fiercely flickering lighting and new enemies that prowl the dark corridors. Known as the Shaker, these swift necromorphs will scare anyone on their first encounter. Their mere presence turns what is happening on the damaged destroyer into an unforgettable horror show.
Dead Space – Crew Compartment
One of the strongest impressions of the Dead Space series is a powerful sense of hopelessness: even if you manage to survive the bloody frenzy, there is a high probability of going insane and committing suicide. Endless despair pervades the crew compartment on Ishimura, where the player will experience an atmosphere of mass suicide and the cold-blooded execution of a good character.
All the power of a location is in its setting. Here you will find basketball courts, recreation areas, and televisions. All this is completely normal, if not for the corpses of the crew everywhere. The level itself in terms of horror pales a little compared to the same hospital or school from Dead Space 2, but still strikes with a vivid juxtaposition of ordinary life and sinister rituals. Combine that with a couple of hunters, improved mutilators, and Isaac’s dark hallucinations, and you have the perfect recipe for pure fear.
Dead Space 2 – Titan Station Memorial Hospital
The opening location of Dead Space 2 is somewhat reminiscent of the dock deck from the first part, only on steroids. After a terrible introduction, full of bizarre hallucinations, the game drastically changes the pace and throws the player into a real meat grinder: necromorphs attack from all sides, troupes of innocent people are torn everywhere and revolt … The unarmed hero can only run and dodge the deadly blades.
From the first moments, the Titan Memorial Hospital does not allow you to relax, because Isaac will enjoy the life of the necromorphs from the first rows. This noisy and fast-paced spectacle is the exact opposite of the first Dead Space, which is why it is so impressive. Dead Space 2 proves from the first scenes that it is much larger, louder and more chaotic than its predecessor, and does it with obvious pleasure.
Dead Space 3 – Abandoned Outpost
Dead Space 3 is often criticized for ditching the series’ previous body horror achievements in favor of low-quality co-op. In most cases, this is true, but do not forget about the abandoned outpost. One has only to hear about “strange sounds in the warehouse” – and immediately it becomes clear: this place has great potential. Plunging from the bright surface of the planet into the groaning depths of underground structures is in itself creepy, and then new enemies appear – eaters.
These eerie hybrids are the result of eating necromorphic flesh. Hordes of eaters roam the lower rooms and are eager to bite off a tidbit from you. There are not many locations in Dead Space 3 that cause panic and horror like the rest of the games in the series, but the abandoned outpost will remind you of past fears and growing claustrophobia. Despite the fact that the third part disappointed most of the fans, this chapter shows that there is still gunpowder in the powder flasks.
Dead Space – Hydroponics compartment
Dead Space has many ways to give the player goosebumps, from surprise attacks to creepy animations. When it comes to the sense of constant threat, there is no equal to the hydroponics compartment. This mutated hell is filled with poisonous gas and seems to live its own life, forcing you to carefully study every wall. The location makes it clear from the very beginning: you are not welcome here.
Add to this the frankly pathetic enemies that make you feel uncomfortable when killing them, a monstrous boss and unscrupulous attacks from giant tentacles – and you are guaranteed continuous fear. There are not many battles and sudden scares here compared to the previous locations on the list, but this section definitely knows a lot about the disgust game.
Dead Space 2 – Church of Unitology
The setting of the fourth and beginning of the fifth chapter in Dead Space 2 presents the player with something unexpected within the walls of the church of unitology. A dramatic change in mood awaits you compared to the rest of the game: the hero, surrounded by gloomy Gothic iconography and puzzled by hallucinations, suddenly finds himself in a losing position. The danger of the church lies not so much in the bloodthirsty monsters, but in the realization of Isaac, who faced something much larger than initially imagined.
However, the level is terrible in itself. The oppressive religious atmosphere is constantly broken by sudden betrayal, screeching corpses and hideous tripods. However, the exquisite decor and diaries of distraught unitologists make this location completely different from all others.
Dead Space – Medical Deck
Horror hospitals are always bad news for players. The Dead Space series is no exception, as Ishimura’s medical deck is literally designed to make players really nervous. The trashed morgue, the terrifying Hunter from the lab, and the hopeless tanks of embryos – the medical deck demoralizes everyone.
This location has a lot of tools in its arsenal to forever remain in the memory of impressionable players. Even all local characters finally succumbed to the madness of their position and chose either death or murder. Want to show someone what Dead Space is? Choose a medical deck and you won’t go wrong. However, after such a demonstration, do not count on friendship, because again: a bunch of reservoirs with infected embryos!
Dead Space 2 – Megalopolis Elementary School
Afraid of the cardboard cartoon sun? Would you like to? Because the fans hated Jumpscair is the least of your problems at the notorious Titan School. This hellish place, briefly appearing in the sixth chapter of Dead Space 2, will not go to you in vain. First of all, it is here that the most dangerous enemy in the game is introduced – the crawler: these are reanimated babies that have turned into real biobombs. Little freaks are nasty and dangerous on their own, but the local playground makes the most of them.
The distraught woman is killed by her own child, while giggling continuously. The happily painted walls and children’s furniture are profusely stained with fresh blood. Of course, the school pales in comparison to the larger levels of the medical deck type, but it hurts much more. It evokes sadness, horror and enduring tension, which in its own way is commendable.
Dead Space 2 – Return to Ishimura
Rarely are appeals to the origins successful. But Dead Space 2 showed that there is nothing better than the good old classics. A return to Ishimura in Dead Space 2 will make most players nervous. The way this level is made testifies to the highest horror prowess in the entire existence of the series.
The chapter “Deja Vu on Ishimur” will not leave indifferent players familiar with the first part. Unlike many other locations, this old ruin will greet you frighteningly quietly: forget about necromorphs and other reasons for fear for a noticeably long time. Silence and calmness gradually builds anticipation through memories and atmosphere, and only when your nerves are at their limit, the game will strike a blow that is hard to forget. The return to Ishimura is magnificent in its intimidation in all aspects. In short, the perfect Dead Space level.
