All of these races are mentioned in one way or another in Mass Effect, but personally none of them appears in the trilogy.

The history of the Mass Effect universe is incredibly extensive. From the codex found in every part (not to mention books, comics, Twitter accounts, and more), we learn a lot that we never knew existed. For example, it contains information about some of the races that exist in the world of Mass Effect, but are not shown to fans.

These species remained behind the scenes for various reasons: some became extinct, others are mentioned only in side materials, and still others were cut out due to lack of time to study. Here’s a list of the alien races we’ve heard of but never met within the Mass Effect trilogy.

Virtual Aliens – Virtual Reality Paradise

Virtual aliens are a race whose representatives have transferred their consciousness into virtual reality in order to escape destruction. In the art above, Reddit user Flint13345 depicted one of them in robotic form, making it easier to interact with other species.

We learned about the existence of virtual aliens thanks to the already inactive Cerberus Daily News Twitter account from Bioware itself. Their race first came into contact with the salarians, who mistook the unfamiliar AI for the geth. However, with the help of a scientist who boarded an alien ship, it was possible to discover that, in fact, virtual aliens were in dire need of new energy sources. In exchange for help from the Citadel Council, they agreed to trade in their advanced technology.

Reloy – Cautious birds

Reloy, portrayed here by user TacoWrath on DeviantArt, is an intelligent bird-like race forced to wear protective suits when interacting with other species due to the danger of viral infection. They first met the Elcor, but the Relay were officially introduced to the galactic community through the asari. In the game, we do not meet this race, since they can rarely be seen outside their home planet, and the rely simply do not have colonies in other worlds.

In addition, when the Reaper invasion began, the Relay did not consider themselves a strong enough race to withstand such a serious threat. Instead, they decided to retreat to their home planet and destroy all satellites and communications in orbit in the hope that the Reapers would not mistake them for an evolved species.

Artenni – Ahead of Time

This is a race about which we know very little. They are believed to have lived in the Zelena Crescent Nebula approximately 300,000 years ago. Probably their homeland was the planet Helime.

At the moment, there is an assumption that Gelime suffered from an unknown cataclysm that destroyed all life on the planet (although there is no evidence that it was he who caused the extinction of the artenni). Based on the remains of mining infrastructure found on one of the planets of the Zelena system, it can be assumed that Artenni technology did not lag behind the modern galactic community in terms of level.

Kiriki – Biotic Beetles

It is an insectoid race that continues to exist during Shepard’s time. As you can see in the art of user Flint13345 on Reddit, members of the species have biotic abilities. This fact became a real breakthrough in science, since it was previously believed that insects cannot use their biotic abilities due to the lack of complexity of the nervous system.

Apart from the use of biotic abilities, in general, this species is considered rather primitive. One scientist suggested that the galactic community should be engaged in educating the Kiriks and taking them to the next level of development, but such a statement sparked a heated debate on the extranet on ethics and morality.

Densorin – Children’s sacrifice

One of the races of the Prothean cycle. Little is known about her, but there is mention of a feud with another ancient race known as the Oravors.

Like the Protheans and many other species, the Densorin were destroyed by the Reapers, but before that they tried to sacrifice their children. The Densorin hoped in vain that such an eerie ritual would appease the Reapers. It is unclear where this idea came from, but in the end, no tricks saved them.

Inusannon – The Ancestors of Repeaters

They are a race that can only be seen in Mass Effect in the form of statues on Ilos. Fans speculated that this is what the Protheans should look like, until with the advent of the DLC this theory was disproved by Javik, the only known Prothean.

The Inusannon were destroyed by the Reapers, and their technology was later discovered by the Protheans. This allowed them in the future to build repeaters, on which, in fact, the modern galactic civilization is based.

Oravors – Part of the Asari mythology

The Oravors, pictured above by Daniel Oryve, existed in the same era as the Protheans. It is believed that they were at war with the Densorin race. It is also known that the Oravors attempted to take over Thessia (the homeworld of the Asari) before the latter learned to go into space. So they dreamed of gaining control over the vast natural resources of the planet.

The Proteans stopped them – and were immortalized in the Asari mythology. During Shepard’s time, they tell legends about how the goddess Atame crushed the gods who were jealous of the asari.

Toi’han – The struggle for Aingan

A representative of the Toy’khan race can be seen at the work of Camille Delmeule on ArtStation. Since Mass Effect fans know very little about Toy’khan, all that remains is to use their imagination to imagine what they might look like.

All we know is that this race fought a war against the Inusannon for the right to colonize the planet Aingana. Unsurprisingly, toy’khan became interested in such a rich and fertile world. Fierce battles are evidenced by the wreckage of spaceships scattered throughout the planet.

Zeiofs – Tomb Builders

The Zeiofs, featured above by user IrreversiblyDeranged on DeviantArt, have inhabited the planet Armenia a long time ago.

It is not known if this planet was the homeworld of the Zeiofs, however, they built numerous architectural masterpieces on it, which in Shepard’s time are considered crypts. Unfortunately, there is practically no information about this race, since the Citadel Council forbids scientists to carry out excavations and other research.

Ja’til – Enslaved Cyborgs

The artist Euderion from DeviantArt did not depict the ja’til themselves, but represented their spherical ships. The Ja’til were synthetics created by the Ms race using artificial intelligence. The reapers were able to subjugate them to the AI, after which they turned everyone, without exception, jha’til into their loyal slaves.

Feeling a threat to themselves, the Protheans decided to wipe this race from the face of the universe, turning the star closest to them into a supernova.
