The release took place on March 30 Evil Genius 2: World Domination. Continuation of the series, where you need to build an empire of evil, beat the forces of good and take over the world, waited 17 years. At the start, the brainchild of Rebellion decided to evaluate almost forty thousand gamers – but were they satisfied? I spent many hours in the game and I hasten to share my impressions.
17 years of solitude
Original Evil Genius was released in 2004 and became a real hit. The game was captivating with humor, caricatured villains and addictive gameplay – no wonder gamers craved a sequel. Alas, instead of a full-fledged sequel, Elixir Studios embarked on creative experiments (obviously unsuccessful), and then completely closed, ruining the resume with four canceled projects.
Fortunately, Rebellion heard the fans’ pleas. Many, of course, wondered if the authors of the Sniper Elite and Zombie Army series would cope with an unfamiliar genre, but still patiently waited. Did Evil Genius 2: World Domination live up to its hopes? Difficult question.
The world under the sole
The universe of Evil Genius 2 is truly nightmare: good in it triumphantly established order and prosperity on every piece of land, people rejected enmity and looked to the future with hope, and villains have long been lying on their shoulder blades. Fortunately, the dark side still has hope to establish its own order! A brave villain arrives on his own island, where a gorgeous casino has already been built – only the seeds of a real evil empire have already been sown behind the legal facade.
The game looks very nice
One of four villains will have to change the status quo, each with their own characteristics. Maximilian is easier to mine gold and has more minions at the start. Red Ivan (he was a bodyguard in the original game) relies on brute force. Zalika conducts research faster and allows scientists to effectively buff staff. Emma’s atrocities attract less attention from enemy agents.
It seems that the variety is great, but in fact, the characters do not affect the gameplay too much. Is it so important to attract less attention if you can reduce it by spending ten thousand gold coins? Is it necessary to accelerate research if soon for development you need special scientists who are destined to meet not soon? Why do you need a large number of pumped guards, if they are already enough?
However, having made a choice, you will instantly forget about the similarities of the characters and plunge into a really exciting gameplay. To establish your own order on Earth, you will have to learn all the wisdom of management and transform the rubble into a majestic multi-storey base. By the way, the training in the game is excellent, but too meticulous. You are led step by step by the hand from the creation of the first corridor to almost world domination.
If you are not a veteran of the series, then you need to go through the tutorial, just get ready for a lot of artificial restrictions. For example, your minions will very soon begin to demand moral rest, but you cannot help them – the necessary room will be unlocked later. You can study for almost a dozen hours, but having absorbed all the wisdom like a sponge, you should say goodbye to the regime for beginners and start your own campaign.
There are only three islands in the game, and some of them are a little more difficult to play.
Although the new start pleases with the absence of restrictions, it is still worth developing in order: it makes no sense to immediately build a guard post, while there are no repeaters, treasury and energy sources on the base. Still, creating an effective base is not easy, but very interesting. You will have to create corridors, arrange dining rooms, make sure that there are always enough lockers for minions, puzzle over where to hide the gold reserves and how to shove a new apparatus into the laboratory – from the outside, such tasks may seem boring, but in fact they carry away … for the time being.
You will soon get comfortable with the game, but the tasks at the base will remain the same. The property will constantly grow and require, for example, more and more energy – since the most powerful generators will not open soon, you will have to build up entire floors with weak units. The same must be repeated with the treasury, cabinets, repeaters and other critical items. This is tiring and time-consuming.
But keeping track of the minions is much easier. Subordinates need to be fed, watered and allowed to relax behind the screen “Villain-TV” – however, the dissatisfied can simply be shot and ordered to burn the corpses. Usually, this kind of cruelty convinces others to be good. It is not a pity for poor fellows who fell under the hot hand, because once a minute one newcomer replenishes the staff for free, and for a generous reward, you can hire an employee instantly. There are never many minions, because it is they who independently perform most of the work, retrain as scientists, casino workers and security guards, and also go on lucrative assignments, from which, alas, they are not destined to return.
I twist and twirl – I want to confuse
Base management is not the only thing that you have to do, because you will replenish the treasury during the “fraud”. As soon as you build the first repeater, you can go to the global map and scout the region, where you will have to turn dark deeds. And very soon your hands will reach every piece of sushi.
In each region there are several types of tasks: the first bring money, but attract attention, the second make the forces of good forget about you, the third lead to the completion of plot and side quests. If you do business inaccurately, then the area will be temporarily blocked, and a couple of curious agents will be sent to your base of power. This will happen regularly, because it is simply impossible to keep track of all the possessions – there are too many of them. However, the consequences are not catastrophic.
There are two claims to the gameplay on the global map. Firstly, as soon as the number of available regions cannot be counted on one hand, the control of routine processes will start to take too much time – and there are so many icons everywhere that you can easily get confused. Secondly, if in the early stages of the game tasks are completed quickly, then soon almost every activity will require an hour (!) Of real time.
If you can quickly reduce your attention with a generous donation, then with tasks such a maneuver will not work – you have to wait. Have you decided to buy the government or hire a super agent? Time the hour. Of course, Evil Genius 2 has time acceleration, but it does not help much. And you can’t relax while the clock is ticking, because valiant heroes can come to the base at any moment.
This approach to game design resembles mobile free-to-play games (among which, of course, there are good ones), but not a full-fledged game for 725 rubles. At the same time, there are no loot boxes in the game (yet), and Rebellion either simply stretches the gameplay, or diligently tries to piss off the gamer.
Do not forget that plans for world domination can collapse at any moment, because the forces of good are not asleep. Your peace can always be disturbed by a group of harmful good people: they arrange sabotages, steal gold, turn off energy and spoil in many other ways.
Special villains can help repel an attack
To stop the scouts, you will have to securely hide the most valuable rooms, create intricate corridors, set up traps and security points, change simple doors for protected ones (however, they are also useless) and keep a solid headquarters of bouncers.
If you noticed the invasion in advance, you can order your subordinates to kill the auditors, take them prisoner (useless action), or convince them of the legality of what is happening. By the way, the casino really works here as a cover, and specially trained personnel are responsible for it. Place more entertainment at the entrance, arrange live music, and hope that the guests will not be attentive enough to recognize the deception.
However, it will not always be possible to avoid penetration, which means be prepared for a fight. Often times, the conflict turns into a ruthless massacre, as a result of which the floor is littered with corpses. Such an outcome can greatly upset some minions, which means that you will have to personally walk around the base using loyalty-increasing abilities, or maybe shoot a couple of rebels. Many other problems await you: the equipment will break down, a sudden fire can burn down a couple of important rooms, and the prisoners will now and then cosplay the Scofield brothers and escape from prison.
In general, it is interesting to build a base, do machinations, click on the nose of the forces of good and not let plans collapse into tartar. Only at the tenth hour, the gameplay starts to tire, and the delay in the gameplay is frankly annoying. The feeling that Doctor Evil has taken over the industry a long time ago and forbids the release of projects, the completion of which takes less than a couple of tens of hours. He insists on stretching games, and the developers have nothing to oppose to the villain. How else to explain Rebellion’s decision to implement mobile mechanics in single player?
Obviously, gamers also paid attention to the mistakes of game design. Since the day of release, online has already halved and continues to fall. It is unlikely that the developers will be able to greatly improve the game, but if you love the original, or are delighted with games in the spirit Dungeon Keeper, Overlord or Two Point Hospital, you will probably like it. Well, personally, I have already played enough and will hardly ever return to the base.
