Within the framework of the recently completed North Caucasian Film Forum, which took place in the capital of the Republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, the city of Cherkessk, location tours were held throughout the republic. Participants and guests of the Film Forum were able to get acquainted with all the diversity of this amazing region and choose locations for future filming.
In Karachay-Cherkessia in different years, famous films were filmed, such as: “Children of Captain Grant” (1936), the Film “Vertical” (1966), the film “While the mountains are standing” (1976), the film “Cold” (1991), the film “Run away, catch up, fall in love” (2015), Film “Karachay-Cherkessia 25” (2018), Film “Sentenced to oblivion” (2019).

Gonachkhir gorge, road to the lake. Tumanly (Karach. “Tubanly kol”)
Gonachkhirskoegorge – this is the protected route of Dombai.
GorgeGonachhir starts 7 km from the Dombai glade, at the confluence of the Amanauz and Gonachhir.
It was here that the famous Military-Sukhum road, which once connected Karachay-Cherkessia with the now sovereign country of Abkhazia. And during the Soviet Union, the famous tourist route number 43 passed here.
The reserve is located on the slopes of the northern part of the Greater Caucasus. Most of its territory is occupied by rocks and forests. On the tops of the mountains there are many glaciers of different sizes, many of them, when melting, form picturesque waterfalls. Mountain rivers and their gorges have unique natural landscapes. Almost 200 lakes are the real adornment of the reserve. Most of the natural sites have tourist routes.
This is the most accessible natural ice in the Teberda Nature Reserve.
It is truly huge – the total area of the formation is 972 hectares, and the length reaches 4.6 km. The shell is covered with deep cracks – up to 60 meters, so walking on it alone is quite dangerous.
Shumka river valley and waterfall
Shumka flows into the Teberda River, in the valley of which the village of the same name is located. The waters of the rivulet are fast, bubbling in places, calm in places, but very noisy throughout, hence its name. Shumka hurries to the big river to reunite with it, overcoming boulders and stones, steep and gentle slopes.
Dombay-Ulgen gorge (karach. “Dommay-Ulgen”)
Dombai-Ulgen is the sunniest place in Dombai. It was here that the first skiing zone was equipped, Vladimir Vysotsky performed here, and Soviet enthusiasts stormed the impregnable Dombai-Ulgen – the highest mountain (4046 m) in the Western Caucasus.
The place amazes with its beauty and variety of natural attractions.
The valley is surrounded on all sides by picturesque mountain peaks, some rocky massifs are covered with snow and glaciers. If you climb to the very top, you can see the purest mountain lakes, the water in which is very cold, but in the summer you can risk swimming. At the top there is fresh air, a lot of sun, and the feeling of boundless freedom does not leave.
Surprisingly little-known miracle of nature in Karachay-Cherkessia. Surprisingly because in terms of the power of the impression it leaves, it is quite capable of comparing with the Grand Canyon in the United States. The name of the plateau comes from the Turkic languages and means “crooked knee”. Although there are other versions: for example, residents of the surrounding area say that in fact the name should be pronounced as “Burmamyt”, which means “curly”, so many cumulus curly clouds live in these parts.
Alibek waterfall has a well-deserved fame as one of the most spectacular in Dombai, so there are always a lot of tourists near it. This landmark is impressive first of all for its height – water flows down the stones from 25 meters.
Sufrudzha waterfalls are among the largest in the whole of Dombai.
Three large waterfalls are located in the gorge formed by the Amanauz River. Waterfalls form streams of water flowing from the Sofrudzhinsky glacier. The height of the fall of the jets reaches 40 meters.
The Chuchkhur waterfall is located in the Dzhuguturluchat massif (translated as “pasture of tours”) at an altitude of 3921 meters above sea level in the Dombai-Ulgen gorge. The Chuchkhur waterfall is a 12-meter cascade located in the territory of the Dombai-Ulgen gorge. Its white-foam stream in spring and summer is framed by the malachite green of meadow grasses and dense forests.
A two-stage stream was formed by the river of the same name, which long ago made its way through the Dombai-Ulgen gorge and flows down its slopes overgrown with young birch forests.
The local name of the lake is Dzhuguturlukel. The name of the lake is quite understandable – mountain tours are frequent guests here.
Lake Turye (Dombay) is very beautiful. Its waters change color depending on the angle of view and the palette of the sky. Basically, the shade ranges from turquoise to azure jade. The water temperature is quite Nordic, even in the heat of summer it does not rise above + 5 ° C.
The most famous tourist attraction in the region. They are located in a picturesque gorge through which the Baduk River flows. The Teberda Biosphere Reserve has sheltered the delightful reservoirs.
A group of three large and a number of small lakes in the Kel-Bashi summit circus. The highest of them is Kara Kel (Black Lake), south of its Big Sophia Lake, surrounded by the rocky walls of Kel-Bashi.
Slightly lower and east of the Bolshoi Lake lies the Lower Lake, into which it flows. and from which the river flows further.
Lake of love
Lake of Love, or Suuk-Djurek-Kol (from Karach. “Cold heart”). The lake is located on the Morg-Syrty plateau at an altitude of 2350 m above sea level, on the territory of the Arkhyz section of the Teberda nature reserve.
Southern Elephant Cave
The entrance to this cavity is located on the northeastern slope of the Gentupo ridge on the right side of the river valley. Left Horn at an absolute height of 1770 meters.
The entrance to the cave was opened by chance by a team of workers from the local forestry enterprise led by V.F. Shcherbakov in 1969, when, while clearing a logging portage, they discovered a vertical well leading into a cave.
The first explorers of the cave were young speleologists from the city of Cherkessk under the leadership of L.B. Dolechka, which gave it a name that is a bit fantastic for our places.
One of the monuments to ancient architecture in Karachay-Cherkessia. Constructed from sandstone blocks, it consists of 5 floors and is part of a fortress that once existed here, which is practically destroyed.
The tower served not only defensive purposes – a fire was made at its top if enemies approached, and in the tower itself food supplies were stored and prisoners were kept.
Two kilometers south of the village on a rock there is a tower built around the 15th century and called by the local Karachai population Goshayakh-Kala – this name is found already in the sources of the early 19th century.
The Nogays call this tower Dzheguta-Kestian, and the Circassians – Askhakili Keskhak. Many beautiful legends about Princess Goshay are associated with the tower.
The Sentin temple is located in the village of Nizhnyaya Teberda. The temple was built in 967 AD. The village of Nizhnyaya Teberda was formerly called in Karachai Synty. The name of the temple is “syty kilisa”, i.e. “Pillar temple”, hence the name of the area – Synty. This is one of the most ancient Alanian temples, but it was built on the site of an even more ancient pagan temple, where people sought peace and blessings. syty – pillar, columnar.
Chuaninsky (distorted – Shoaninsky) temple is a Christian cathedral, one of the Alanian temples, erected in the first half of the X century, located on the territory of modern Karachay-Cherkessia. The throne was consecrated in honor of St. George the Victorious. It is located on the southeastern spur of Mount Chuana (from Karach – “upland”).
Special Astrophysical Observatory (SAORAS)
The astrophysical observatory of the Worldn Academy of Sciences is located in Nizhniy Arkhyz. At present, the observatory is the largest Worldn astronomical center for ground-based observations of the Universe.
It was formed in 1966.
Cherkessk is a small town of Karachay-Cherkessia, which is the capital of the Republic. The city is located in the Ciscaucasian zone on the right bank of the Kuban River.
Cherkessk was founded in 1825.
Dombai cable cars
