The highly anticipated show from Amazon Prime finally has a release date.
If you are like me, then you also forgot several times and remembered that Amazon is filming a new series based on the Lord of the Rings. Well, 5 years have passed since that time and one (still ongoing) pandemic, we were finally able to take a first look at the show, and also found out the release date: September 2, 2022.
You read that right, there is still more than a year before the series was released, but now we understand that the series is real. And judging by the image above, which was shared by official Twitter today, I can see where the $ 450 million budget goes (by the way, this budget makes the TV show the most expensive in history). According to the attentive fans who responded to the post, the region depicted in the image is Valinor and the city of Valmar, home of the elves during the time frame the series is expected to take place in.
Fans who have taken a closer look at the material also think that two characters are from the deep lore of the Lord of the Rings: The Two Trees of Valinor, Laurelin and Telperion. This is my first time hearing about these guys with huge leaves, so don’t judge me, but what the unofficial Lord of the Rings wiki says about them:
The two Trees of Valinor, also known as the Valar Trees or simply the Two Trees, were Laurelin (Golden Tree) and Telperion (Silver Tree), who brought light to the Land of the Valar in ancient times. They were destroyed by Melkor and the primeval spider Ungoliant, but their last flower and fruit were transformed by the Valar into the Sun and Moon. “
Presumably, the above information will help big Lord of the Rings fans determine the timeline of the TV show. We know from previously published maps that the show takes place somewhere in the Second Age, thousands of years before the events of the Peter Jackson films. It seems a little strange to me that these trees became the sun and the moon, but perhaps this is a joke on Melkor and his spider buddy. Also, I hope none of this is a spoiler that I will be scolded for next September.
The arrival of a new Lord of the Rings show is likely to spark a surge of interest in Tolkien’s universe, which will likely mean more games to come.
