Masha Gottlieb, Program Director of the Documentary Film Center (CDC) and the Nonfiction.film platform, spoke about ways to promote documentaries. She shared her experience during her speech at the All-Worldn conference “Renting of documentary films in World: the present and the future” as part of the Flahertiana festival.

CDK began distributing documentary films in 2015. Then came the first two releases “Dior and Me” and “Night Comes”. This experience made it possible to understand that this direction is worth developing. In total, the Center has already released over 30 films. Distribution success is influenced by the way pictures are promoted. One of the most common ways is to collaborate with various organizations and popular personalities.

For example, to promote the film “Anne Frank. Parallel Stories ”, famous actresses Chulpan Khamatova, Renata Litvinova, Ravshana Kurkova, Ingeborga Dapkunaite and others were involved. They all read fragments from the diaries of a Jewish girl. After that, the materials were posted on the social networks of the actresses. So the attention of fans of idols to the picture was attracted.
Another example of a successful collaboration is cooperation with the Moscow Department of Transport. The film “Woman”, which brought together the stories of 2,000 women from 50 countries, was the first CDK release after the pandemic. At the same time, the first female train drivers appeared in the Moscow metro. Within the framework of the project, many of the latter were presented to passengers in the style of a film, and the corresponding slogan called for learning even more women’s stories while watching “Woman” in cinemas.

In addition, Masha Gottlieb noted that at the present time the distribution of documentaries is going through hard times. The restrictions due to the pandemic have forced many cinemas to only show proven blockbusters. However, the program director of the Center is sure that this time should just wait out, without giving up.

“High-profile feature films are gaining a large box office. However, this does not exclude the fact that documentary films sometimes collect more. “
