He Came From Beyond – a mod for Doom 2 made of stickers

“Animated sketch” built into the Doom 2 engine.

Don’t know what to do with a few dozen stickers lying around in your desk drawer? How about using them to give Doom a new look?

Modders were able to do something unique with the early Doom games from Id Software. One talented artist gave the new fashion a morbid glow by painting all of the game’s textures on yellow stickers.

He Came From Beyond, which debuted on ModDB late last year, is a first-person adventure where every surface, every graphic and font has been “hand-drawn on stickers.” The video above shows this simple style as an outline of a beautiful forest landscape.

“I suddenly discovered that stickers are very similar to empty Doom textures,” writes developer Szuran. “So I started drawing on stickers and scanning them. This is how the idea of this game was born. “

In fact, it’s a great way to overcome the engine’s limitations – blending the sky and background to remove the blocky geometry that the Doom engine has. It’s also incredible how the faded yellow stickers add a Lovecraftian feel to the game, exuding a pale, unhealthy glow.

Szuran hopes the game will be completed by the end of 2021, although you can follow the progress right now on ModDB. However, while He Came From Beyond pushes the boundaries of Doom 2’s aesthetic, mods like 2018’s Total Chaos are breaking them, creating games that look torn from their Id Software roots for decades.
