Let’s take a look at the timeline of the Fallout series.
Since its inception, the Fallout series has been a staple in the post-apocalyptic genre. The series has titles for everyone – top-down, open-world, dungeon, shooters and MMORPGs.
The plot, character styles and atmosphere have remained unchanged from the very beginning to the present. The consistency of ghouls and super mutants from the first game is an important factor in helping gamers keep track of changes in the series.
The overall storyline is much deeper than it initially seemed. Over the years, the series has grown more and more. Hopefully, in reality, humanity will not repeat the events of the Fallout timeline.
Fallout 1 – 2161
At the time of the release of this game, the genre of post-apocalyptic RPGs was practically undeveloped. The title has gained a fan base thanks to a setting of lawless border towns fighting to survive amid power struggles and mafia rule.
Fallout redefined RPGs and created an organic world full of … life? A new style of enemies, ghouls and super mutants has allowed Fallout to stand out from the crowd.
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood Of Steel — 2197 год
Tactical squad control sets this Fallout title apart from others. Keeping a 3/4 top view, this game has moved away from sandbox-style gameplay.
The title focuses more on gameplay rather than plot. The result is a squad management game with lightweight RPG elements. However, it’s a great title that helped make Fallout better.
Fallout: Brotherhood Of Steel — 2208 год
This part of the Fallout series changed the style of play again. The title has become more about dungeons. The battles began to take place in real time. The game has moved away from a tactical approach. The fans were divided. The rating was lower than that of the first games.
Fallout 2 – 2241
Fallout 2 builds on the stunning gameplay and storytelling of the first game. The witty storyline, the battles and the world they created have been improved in many ways. The only thing that seemed to divide the fans’ opinion was the pop culture references and the fact that the game was taken less seriously.
The team experimented a bit with the content, making it different from what you might expect after the first part, but this is purely subjective.
Fallout 3 – 2258
This game changed the RPG genre forever. By replacing the 3/4 top view with a first-person perspective, the series got the necessary level of immersion. Fallout 3 brought the series to a wider audience, making it accessible to RPG and FPS fans, mixing both genres in perfect harmony.
Fallout: New Vegas — 2281 год
Taking the best of Fallout 3 and bringing it to New Vegas was a smart move. Fallout New Vegas is a fan favorite to this day. The storytelling, gameplay (glitches and all) and the overall story arc made this the best game for many fans of the series. According to many, the series peaked with this title.
Fallout 4 – 2287
Making the story and gameplay more accessible is both a good and a bad decision at the same time. The tactical shooter-style gameplay, replaced by gunfights, attracted completely new gamers.
Fallout 4 plunged shooter fans into the RPG genre deeper than most games released the same year. It also frustrated fans who fell in love with the tactical shooter that drew them to the series. The title sparked the love / hate of fans, but it sold well and was a great way to dive into this deeply detailed world.
Fallout 76 – 2102
MMORPG. Fiasco or failure. You decide. Many people liked the MMORPG in the Fallout world, but others abandoned the series when it entered the genre. Aside from the updates, the attempt to lure another group of gamers, online gamers, has left bitterness in the mouths of many fans.
The Fallout series has come a long way from its inception to the present day. If you have the opportunity to play the streak in order, you will see the streak grow. Experiments in genre, gameplay, story arcs, and accessibility. This series has titles for all gamers.
