The series “Red Rainbow”, the production of which was headed by Alexander Rodnyansky (producer “Dislike”, “Dylda”), won the main prize at the international festival Series Mania. As a reward, the project received 50 thousand euros for further development.
The plot of “Red Rainbow” is based on real events that took place in the Soviet capital in 1978. Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Ivan Kapitonov invited a delegation of communists from Germany who were members of the HAW organization. Members of this organization expressed great respect for the Soviet regime and wanted to improve relations with local youth. A few days before the arrival of guests, it becomes known that the abbreviation HAW stands for Homosexuelle Aktion Westberlin (Homosexual Movement of West Berlin). The delegation is still met in Moscow and allowed to stay, although in the same year in the USSR about 1300 people were convicted under the article “Sodomy”.
Rodnyansky acquired the rights to film this story from the translator Larisa Belzer, who accompanied the young people in the late 70s and tried to hide the real purpose of their arrival. She showed the German guests the sights of the capital, and to the questions “Where do you have gay clubs here?” However, the delegation continued to insist on a meeting with representatives of the gay community of the USSR and Larisa Belzer admitted that mostly gay people meet in public toilets. She said that on the walls there can be seen offers of same-sex sex. In the end, the German representatives did go to the public toilet, accompanied by the translator’s husband, in order to establish contact with the gay community of the Soviet Union.
The script will be adapted by British playwright Matt Jones, who has worked on several episodes of Doctor Who, Skins and Dirk Gently. The start date of the filming of the project is still unknown.
