Moviestart once again publishes a selection of the most interesting news from the world of cinema over the past few days.
Shooting of the screenlife-horror “Resurrected” has started in Los Angeles. Timur Bekmambetov, who is celebrating his 60th anniversary today, will be the producer of the film. And the director’s chair of the project will be taken by the Worldn cinematographer Yegor Baranov, the author of such films as “Gogol”, “Locust” and “Last Yolki”. The main role will be played by Hollywood star Dave Davis (Logan, Lucifer, The Walking Dead).
The picture will take viewers to the distant future. On the screen, Davis will be reincarnated as an ordinary priest, who begins to investigate a series of strange murders committed by resurrected people. Gradually plunging into the matter, the main character uncovers a whole conspiracy in which the Catholic Church is involved, and this endangers not only his life, but also the life of his son Nicholas.
It is worth noting that Bekmambetov has already shot films in English several times. Many of his screenlife films have been critically acclaimed at major film festivals and have received large box office receipts around the world on a minimal budget. Screenlife technology, patented by the producer, means that the action will mainly take place on the screen of a computer or any other device.
It is expected that Bekmambetov’s new work will also attract the attention of viewers from all over the world. The distribution company Pulsar Content has already sold the rights to rent “Resurrected” to France, Germany, Switzerland, South Korea, Latin America and the Middle East.
The International Television Emmy Awards will introduce an additional gender-neutral term “performer” for Best Actor and Actress. The organizers of the TV award agreed to remove the usual divisions to represent different genders. From 2021, the nominees will be able to independently choose how they will be represented by the jury and what exactly will be written in the certificate or on the statuette next to their name. At the same time, the names of the nominations “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” will remain unchanged, but the descriptions of the categories will become more detailed and will take into account different representatives of gender.
The Academy also made another significant adjustment: documentaries of any timing will not be able to participate in the competition if they have already been nominated for an Oscar. The founders explained this decision by the fact that the films applying for the film award cannot be considered television works. This is contrary to the charter and the concept of the Emmy.
The 73rd Television Awards will take place on September 19 this year, and the nominees for the statuettes will be announced in a few weeks. It is still unknown in what format the award ceremony will be held, but the organizers promised to share the details of the event soon.
The jury for the 74th Cannes Film Festival this year consisted of five women and four men, not counting the chairman of the board, two-time Academy Award winner Spike Lee.
The winners of the film festival will be chosen by French singer and composer Mylène Farmer, actress and director Matti Diop (“Killer Simon”), American cinematographer Maggie Gyllenhaal (“The Dark Knight”), French actress and director Melanie Laurent (“Inglourious Basterds”), actor Tahar Raheem (The Serpent, The Mauritanian), Brazilian director and screenwriter Kleber Mendonsa Filho (Aquarius, Sounds Nearby), Song Kang Ho, who played in Parasites and Taxi, and screenwriter Jessica Hausner. It is interesting that this year almost everyone who joined the jury is the laureates of the Cannes Festival of different years. And for the first time in the history of the competition, the majority of council representatives are women.
Let us remind you that the film festival will be held in the usual format from 6 to 17 July, and the winners will be announced by the jury at the closing ceremony on the last day. The main program included films by Wes Anderson, Paul Verhoeven, Jacques Audiar, Mia Hansen Loew, François Ozon, Justin Cruzel and other filmmakers.
The shooting of Boris Khlebnikov’s new film Three Minutes of Silence started in St. Petersburg the other day. The author of the series “Storm” and the drama “Arrhythmia”, together with the CTB film company, is filming the novel of the same name by Georgiy Vladimov, which tells about the difficult life of Worldn sailors. The main roles in the film will be played by Alexander Robak (“The Geographer Drank the Globe”), Timofey Tribuntsev (“Doctor Liza”), Eugene Syty (“Live”), Sergei Nasedkin (“Arrhythmia”), Anatoly Popov (“Arrhythmia), Mikhail Kremer ( “Dyatlov Pass”) and others. Boris Khlebnikov and his colleague in the film “Arrhythmia” Natalia Meshchaninova were involved in the adaptation of the sea drama.
The action of the picture takes place on the ship “Bullfinch”. The crew of sailors on deck have one common goal – to catch as many fish as possible, make money and return home safe and sound. Among them there are two recruits, Nikita and Maxim, leaving behind their past and everything that was dear to them, they get used to the new and not always friendly society of sailors. And the difficulties that await the heroes on board the ship will become a real test for them.
After the northern capital, the film crew plans to go to the Kola Peninsula, where Andrei Zvyagintsev’s film Leviathan was filmed, and stay there until the end of September. The film is expected to hit theaters only in 2023.
The film company of the most successful Hollywood director Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Partners has struck a deal with the streaming platform Netflix: now Spielberg’s brainchild will release several full-length films every year especially for the online cinema. Perhaps the director himself will lead the shooting of some projects.
The filmmaker believes the Netflix deal is a “tremendous opportunity” to tell new stories and connect with viewers. “This is a new path for our films, along with the stories we continue to tell with our longtime family at Universal and our other partners,” said Steven Spielberg.
Interestingly, the director was previously skeptical about streaming. Two years ago, Spielberg said that Netflix projects that pass in theaters cannot be nominated for an Oscar. In his opinion, such tapes should have been classified as television broadcasting and, therefore, awarded only with an Emmy statuette.
The companies are now working on the film “Maestro”, which will tell about the great composer Leonardo Bernstein. The main role in the film will be played by Bradley Cooper.
A teaser has been released for another film that will compete for the Palme d’Or at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival. This time viewers will be able to see the trailer for the film “Titan” directed by Julia Ducorno. This is the first full-length work of a French director in the past five years. Ducorno’s past work “Raw” won the FIPRESCI prize at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival.
The main character of the picture is a boy who was considered missing for about ten years. Unexpectedly for everyone, he returns home, and in parallel, in the same area, several brutal murders take place, which shock all of its inhabitants. The rest of the plot details have not yet been disclosed. The synopsis of the upcoming picture is as follows: “Titanium is a metal with high resistance to heat and corrosion, it is often used in medical prostheses because of its pronounced biocompatibility.”
The film stars Gerance Marilier (Raw), Vincent Lyndon (Welcome), Natalie Boyer (Versailles), Dominique Froth (Her name is Sarah), Anais Fabre (Whirlpool) and others.
