Shenmue 3 mod brings back Ren and Lan Di’s original voices

Voice-overs Eric Kelso and Paul Lucas collaborated with Shenmue Dojo on the mod.

It took a long time to develop Shenmue 3, but it was worth the wait. “A flawless continuation of the series, covering all its shortcomings” – this is how the game was described in our review. However, she was not entirely flawless: Corey Marshall agreed to re-voice the main character Ryo Hazuki, but the other actors turned down the offer, which the players quickly noticed.

The problem was partially corrected thanks to a new mod, to work on which Eric Kelso and Paul Lucas, voice actors from previous parts of the franchise, were involved. Eric was the voice of Win Ren in Shenmue 2, where he was later replaced by Greg Chun, while Lucas voiced the villainous Lan Di in Shenmue 1 & 2, which was later played by Kyle McCarley.

In an email, Kelso confirmed that the voice in the new fashion really belongs to him and, most interestingly, he was not paid to work.

“ShenmueDojo and I have been working on this for the past six months. I volunteered for this, just out of love for Shenmue and the community. It was great to voice Ren again! ”The actor admitted.

The Ren / Lan Di mod for Shenmue 3 is available for download on the Shenmue Dojo. You can take a closer look at Kelso’s work in the video below.
