Do you love games in which you have to craft ammunition from paper clips and sawdust while creepy monsters roam behind your back? Then this collection is for you.
People who are not very familiar with the genre may think that a third-person view completely kills immersion in a world where you need to pay attention to all the details, but in fact, in third-person horror games, it is best to convey the atmosphere of horror.
Such games also give a reason to indulge in nostalgia for the good old survival horror that came out before 2015. In those days, developers were not yet abusing cheap screamers and excessive shock content, but relied on creative design and high-quality sound effects.
Resident Evil series – PlayStation, PC
The Resident Evil series pioneered the genre. It was the original RE that launched a wave of horror games with extremely limited resources and mandatory puzzles. In the classic parts, it was necessary to count each cartridge and plan further actions in order not to end up in a stalemate.
All these features have migrated to Resident Evil Village, but if you are not yet familiar with the series, then it’s better to start with the first part. And not only in order to understand the plot, but also then to experience the whole gamut of emotions that many of us experienced as children during the first playthrough and for which we fell in love with the franchise.
The protagonists of the Resident Evil series are several characters who are trying to get rid of biological weapons created by the government and turning people into zombies, and sometimes even more creepy creatures. Here you will have to use all resources wisely (sometimes even save slots) and prepare in advance for solving ingenious puzzles.
Silent Hill Series – PlayStation
All Silent Hill games are based on a simple concept: bringing all of the protagonist’s (and the player’s) worst nightmares to life. All parts are set in the small town of Silent Hill, in which deep fears from the subconscious are able to take physical form. And everyone who finds himself in it sees something of his own.
Every Silent Hill was a hit, aside from the controversial Homecoming. These games did a great job of creating a cold and viscous atmosphere of horror – both in a third-person view and in a first-person demo format (PT).
Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3 enjoy the greatest acclaim among fans of the series for their excellent storylines and great gameplay. Even in 2021, fans of these games continue to find eerie detail and awe-inspiring sound effects that many might have overlooked on their first playthrough.
Puppet Combo Games – PC
Puppet Combo is a modern indie developer and a big fan of 80s slasher horror and 90s third person horror. In his work, Puppet Combo combines his two main passions, writing surprisingly creative scenarios and creating addictive gameplay. Imagine impressionable teenagers from the 80s with their crazy hairstyles and baggy clothes, who arrived at a car cinema for the premiere of a new slasher, and you will roughly understand what to expect from playing Puppet Combo games with friends.
Puppet Combo projects are very popular with YouTube bloggers right now, as games focus on pure horror without being distracted by graphical bells and whistles. And the main threat in these games, as a rule, is either serial killers or various paranormal activities.
Deadly Premonition – PS3, Xbox 360, ПК
Many gamers treat this project with great irony and launch Deadly Premonition mainly to laugh at the local dialogues. And there really is something to laugh at here – clichéd lines and clumsy presentation raise serious doubts about the skill of the scriptwriters. Add to that awkward controls and you have a horror game that brings in fits of laughter, not fear. Oddly enough, but all of the above are in fact the advantages of Deadly Premonition.
It is modeled after classic TV series such as Twin Peaks and The X-Files, where the same clichéd dialogues and an FBI agent investigating mysterious cases in godforsaken towns were at the forefront. If you like these series, and you are ready in advance not to take the game too seriously, then this is the perfect survival horror for you.
Alan Wake – Xbox, ПК
Alan Wake has already become a horror classic, beloved by many fans of the genre. The plot in the game is built around a writer who finds himself in the world of horrors created by him. This is a third-person horror game with elements of a psychological thriller and a rich story.
And in 2020, the sci-fi Control came out from the same studio that released Alan Wake. Alan Wake and Control are set in the same universe, and both stories are executed with the same quality, although they differ in tone. If you’ve played Control, want to delve into this universe and love horror, then you definitely shouldn’t miss Alan Wake.
Remothered: Tormented Fathers – ПК, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch
Remothered is a psychological thriller in which all problems are not solved by shooting. You find yourself in a creepy mansion and you are armed only with your ingenuity. From each skirmish, you can get out with either stealth or brute force, as well as use an emergency option: escape from opponents.
The game was released in 2018, not finding the era when classic survival horror games were at the peak of popularity among gamers. But that didn’t stop the developers from delivering a quality product, where the best elements of psychological thrillers are mixed with inventive puzzles.
Obscure I & II – PS2, Xbox, ПК
In the early 2000s, several vibrant survival horror films laid the foundation for the entire genre. Among them were the cooperative horror games Obscure I and Obscure II with an abundance of puzzles. They were asked to play for a group of teenagers who found themselves in the very center of terrible events in the school scenery.
Obscure strikes a good balance between sudden screamers and a stringy atmosphere of dread. Both games can be played with friends, enjoying Resident Evil and Silent Hill storylines and creative game design.
The Evil Within – PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, ПК
The Evil Within is another relatively recent horror game that has already become a cult classic. This franchise was created by the same people who were responsible for the first parts of Resident Evil, so you don’t have to worry about the quality of the gameplay and atmosphere.
The local story tells about a detective who finds himself in a creepy paranormal world, where he will fight with real incarnations of nightmares – the authors of the game deliberately tried to make the monsters as disgusting as possible.
Dead Space – PS3, Xbox 360, ПК
The creators of Dead Space have successfully combined third-person survival horror with a space setting. This time we find ourselves not in a town with zombies, but in the vastness of endless space, being locked on the same ship with monsters. In the role of Isaac Clark, the last survivor on this ship, we have to fight our way through crowds of opponents.
The most memorable gameplay mechanic is the ability to shoot off the limbs of enemies in order to gain time and not waste resources on finishing moves. The original game was followed by Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 3 with unique cooperative modes and spectacular battles.
Fatal Frame – PS2, Nintendo 3DS, Wii, Xbox
Authors from Japan are particularly creative when creating horror films, and this applies to both films and video games. The insanely scary Fatal Frame was no exception. This is an old PS2 game in which the player’s only weapon in the dark is not a pistol or fists, but a camera.
The main gameplay is to take slow walks around the haunted school. And there is only one way to scare away ghosts: by pointing the camera at them and trying to shoot them in close-up. Thus, you have to either deliberately run into screamers, or constantly die in the school corridors.
