what format is the future for? ” ⋆ MovieStart | Easy Online Work

A public talk was held within the framework of the X International Festival of Short Films KONIK on August 13 “Short meter vs web series: what format is the future for? “

Participants: producer Kirill Alekhin (“Rooster”, “Bribe”), director Alexei Needed(“Rooster”, “Natural Selection”, “Easy Katka”), producers and directors Andrey Fenochka, Liza Simbirskaya (“I’m Going to Search”), actress Natalia Tetenova (“The Millionaire from Balashikha”), co-founder of the Arka Higher Film School and Deputy Director of the Institute of Film Industry, National Research University Higher School of Economics Dmitry Kotov, producer Ivan Plechev (“Dark Night”, “Smoke”, web series “Soldier”).

The meeting was moderated by Elena Korzhaeva, executive producer of the CinePromo film festival promotion company, the organizer of the KONIK festival.

The meeting participants discussed the trends emerging in modern cinema, the advantages of the web over the short film, festivals over the Internet, as well as the nuances of working with different customers of content. In addition, the speakers spoke about the relationship between the industry and the state and, of course, gave advice to novice filmmakers, including actors.

According to Kirill AlekhinaWhile short films and participation in film festivals were traditionally considered the entrance ticket to the industry, now web series are a more effective tool for building a career.

“Even if you successfully present your short film to the public, the next stage in your career should be the transition to big cinema. That is, you have to make a sharp jump, which few people are capable of. But now there are web series – this is exactly the step by which you can make this transition “, – explained Kirill Alekhin.

Ivan Plechev noted that the short film can also help its creator in establishing contacts with industry players. At the same time, he recalled that the main thing in cinema is history, and form is secondary.

“It seems to me that we have to go from history, not every story can be told in the format of a web series”, – said the director and said that he owes his career to his first job – a short film, which was noticed by the producers, after which they invited the young artist to the industry.

Dmitry Kotov added that every filmmaker chooses his own path: over the years of his teaching practice, he has met different students. Someone gravitates to television, someone to online platforms, someone freely expresses themselves and claims to create auteur cinema. As for the short film, then, according to the speaker, this format is great for people who have no experience in cinema.

“Short meter is the first try of the pen. I think the short films will remain, perhaps, as term papers – the genre will not die. Moreover, online platforms have recently become interested in projects of this type. If earlier we tried to “teach” students to shorten the timekeeping, then online platforms, on the contrary, are waiting for work with a timing of at least 20 minutes. Colleagues from START, for example, they explained this by the fact that, according to their data, the user only chooses for half an hour what to watch, and he is unlikely to opt for a ten-minute video “– explained the speaker.

He also stressed that in recent years, filmmakers have developed an understanding of what the web is. “Previously, even experienced producers called Game of Thrones a web series, although HBO is a cable channel, and the fact that this series came out in the online cinema Amediateka did not make it a web. Today we figured out this format and even classified it “, – told Dmitry Kotov.

The speaker counted 5 types of web:

  • satellite TV series (spin-off)
  • works of students, aspiring filmmakers
  • branded content where advertising is “wired”
  • “Pilot”, the so-called proof-of-concept
  • pure creativity products, independent projects.

According to Dmitry Kotov, today is an amazing time – a time of variety of forms and wide opportunities for filmmakers. Moreover, from the array of artists he singled out precisely the young, “not blinkered” by self-censorship and life experience, but free and ready for experiments, the result of which, as a rule, is not “a rehash of Western blockbusters, but an attempt to frankly and boldly talk about painful things, and this is very great”.

Liza Simbirskaya carried herself and Andrey Fenochka to the category of authors “who experiment with information or how to present it.” She noted that it is extremely difficult to monetize experimental cinema, because in this case you will have to go to the mainstream with your ideas, to the producers, and this is a partial or complete loss of independence.

“Our idea from the very beginning was that we decided not to adapt to anyone, but simply to make the product that we wanted to do – on the topics that excite us. And it worked – he came to us Anton Kalinkin, who became interested in one of our projects, then we organized crowdfunding, etc. We were not looking for a producer who would bring us to a large audience. We thought, how many of us are those who are interested in the same as we are, and it turned out that there are many – 5-10-15 thousand people. And these people watch every episode of our series “, – told Liza Simbirskaya.

The star of the “Kukotsky Case” Natalia Tetenova noted that she has not yet starred either in short films or on the web, and “Millionaire from Balashikha” became her debut in this sense.

“The coolest thing about the project” Millionaire from Balashikha “is that no one should have known that this is a web series”, – emphasized the actress, explaining that initially it was brand content with very unobtrusive advertising. Nobody understood, for example, that Modulbank had invested in the project.

At the same time, a public current participant recommended that novice actors start with a short meter.

“The artist must understand how he starts working on the project and what message he brings to the viewer, and for this he needs to know the ending. On the web, it happens, they give a script, and then it turns out that they are finishing the eighth episode there. And the artist must practice, and the short film is the best option. Of course, it’s cool if the actor is lucky, and he, like my classmate Sasha Yatsenko, will go straight to the full meter. But a short one is also a good opportunity to start working on yourself ”, – explained Natalia Tetenova.

Despite the abundance of high-quality short films, the best of which are presented, for example, on the channel Short TV, this type of content, according to public current participants, remains the least cost-effective.

“Cinema is an expensive form of expression, but a short film has no return,” – summarized Kirill Alekhin.

The participants of the event also talked about the relevance and functions of film festivals in modern digital reality.

“Festivals are no longer needed, because today you already go out to the audience via the Internet. The festival, on the other hand, is a long and very thorny road. The film “Rooster” was not taken to the first festival, they said that the story was irrelevant, but in the end we showed it to more than 70 competitions in different countries of the world. However, festivals are valuable for networking. But this is not a career route. The career route is to go straight to the audience and producers and move on. The Internet is an excellent litmus test, thanks to which you can really quickly understand whether you can or not. “, – stressed Kirill Alekhin.

He also added that today the awards brought from the festivals are of little interest to anyone. “Everyone is impressed – a) the ability to keep the genre, b) fit into a small budget, c) adherence to deadlines. No one needs the figurines – they are a keepsake, children, ” – explained a participant in the discussion.

Anton Fenochka added that it is more convenient to show the web at festivals.

“Traditional short films require unavailability on the Internet, they must first be shown to the participants of the festival, and then to the rest of the audience. It’s easier with web series – you bring works that have already gained a certain number of views ”, – the expert specified.

Ivan Plechev noted that in addition to networking, festivals are a place where the freshest and brightest works collected in recent years are concentrated.

“The amount of content on the Internet is super huge, and festivals are a place where people from the industry are concentrated, and they usually do not have time to watch this content in their everyday life. They just watch it at festivals. But festivals give me the main thing – the feeling of being involved in world cinema ”, – the director shared.

Dmitry Kotov added that in addition to being busy, directors and producers have a certain isolation from what is happening in the industry – while they are immersed in their projects. And festivals provide an opportunity to get acquainted with the work of colleagues in a short time and develop observation.

In conclusion, the participants of the public-talk shared their opinion on how the web series of the online platform is perceived today. According to Kirill AlekhinaOver the past few years, dialogue with producers has become much more positive.

«I walked on platforms five years ago. They answered me – you are great, cool, take it off and bring it. Now they are really looking for – new authors, scripts and products “, – said the producer.

Dmitry Kotov explained the growing interest of leaders and top managers of online platforms in the series with the desire to retain the attention of viewers and attract new subscribers. “It is important for the platforms that the user renews the subscription, and it is easier to keep his attention with serials than short films.”, – the expert specified.

He also explained that different customers are guided by their goals and objectives.

“The platforms have a bolder target audience, and they are also more solvent. Accordingly, its representatives are waiting for more diverse, vibrant, niche content – they want stories that will not be shown on federal channels. Federal channels, on the other hand, are geared towards a wide audience, they need universal heroes, they are limited by censorship and format. And brand companies want not to scare off their target audience, even if they can attract a new one. It is important for them to act within the framework of corporate values and in the interests of their clients “, – noted Dmitry Kotov.

Kirill Alekhin added his colleague, noting that today it is often easier to work with government and subordinate institutions than with commercial companies.

“The Ministry of Culture does not have a task to gain 100 million views, their task is to educate 100 people who will become the face of Worldn cinema in the near future. Today, state institutions do not teach you about life, but listen carefully – a delicate and trusting dialogue is being built between us ”, – concluded the speaker.
